Speed testers... do you understand the results?

Like many of our clients, we make great use of speed test websites to check "upload" and "download" speeds.

However, for this to be effective, you do need to understand the results and these are not always clear.

If you have a network running on a single Broadband connection and you run a test showing you the following results;

Speed Test

the speeds shown are a reasonable reflection of the available speed at the exact time the test was performed.  The speed is dependant on:

the amount of local traffic leaving over the same Broadband

the actual speed the Broadband line will support

the inbound speed of the server to which you are testing

the amount of traffic on the Internet at that time.

The Internet will run at the slowest speed of the slowest link between two points.

There are other parameters to take into consideration.

On many of our networks we use multiple Broadband circuits to perform some very complicated algorithms to spread or balance the traffic across the multiple circuits. In this case, the result will only relate to the particular circuit that you have tested and not to the other remaining circuits.
