Internet Explorer is the world's most popular browser. This is simply because it automatically came with every PC purchased over the years and purchasers didn't realise that the market could already offer alternative browser options.
Over the years, Internet Explorer has proven itself vulnerable to viruses. Clearly Microsoft have been looking to improve this for many years.
